Introducing the Superhero Haggadah: A Story of Signs and Marvels
I never expected to write this one, but I hope you'll love it
I haven’t written here in months.
But I have been writing. And now I can share my new project with you.
Back in 2017 when I wrote The Unofficial Hogwarts Haggadah, I would have laughed out loud at the thought of writing a companion volume about Marvel superheroes. Combining the worlds of Torah and Harry Potter was the natural result of two decades of using the wizarding world as a teaching tool in my school and synagogue. Not only was I not versed in the superhero creations of Stan Lee and their cinematic portrayals, I looked down upon those who were.
Boy, do times change.
It started small. First, as a prize in my school’s annual charity auction, I offered to write a Harry Potter short story which would place a child in Hogwarts. To make the story more appealing to the winning family’s son, I asked him what his interests were, and the answer came back: superheroes. So with the guidance of my children, I watched the necessary movies to put Iron Man in Hogwarts, along with this lucky young man.
Then, as readers of this newsletter know, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I needed to undergo hormonal treatment, surgery, and radiation.
During the course of my treatments, which took place in the shadow of coronavirus across New York, I was weak, fatigued, and emotional. To cheer me up, my children composed a watchlist of Marvel movies and proceeded to watch them with me. Slowly, I began to see the very human issues that these augmented humans had to face: Exclusion, identity, responsibility, trust, maturity, guilt, and so many more. I started writing down these ideas, and well, the result is this Haggadah.
