I published this in The Forward today to explain the reaction of my congregation to the new restrictions on religious services imposed by Governor Cuomo.
We’ve done everything right.
We closed in March while other synagogues were waffling. When allowed to reopen, we adhered strictly to limits on numbers of worshippers. We masked, measured, and distanced, in contradistinction to other congregations in our area. But we have the mazel to be in a red area. We must limit our services this Sukkot and Simchat Torah to 10 people, while other, less careful synagogues will have larger services - because of a line drawn on a map. It’s frustrating. It’s angering. It isn’t fair. But we’ll do it anyway.
